beaTunes 3.5.18

beaTunes3 logoJust like 3.5.17, this is a minor update that fixes—you guessed it—minor issues.

You can get the updated version via the regular download page.

Java7 support on OS X

Just like for previous releases, I'd like to put a version out there that contains a bundled Java7 runtime environment. This version requires a 64bit OS X 10.7.3 or later. It does not explicitly support Retina displays.

You can get it here.

Please note that the Java 7 version is not properly signed, because of changes in Apple's codesign tool. To run it, you must turn Gatekeeper off—otherwise OS X will tell you that the app is broken and should be moved to the trash.

64bit support on Windows

Also I'd like to offer a 64bit version for Windows. This version requires Windows 7 or later. Because it does not use QuickTime anymore, some audio formats like Apple Lossless are not supported.

You can get it here.

Changes in 3.5.18

  • Updated Windows JRE
  • Fixed some intra-list drag and drop issues
  • Fixed track id deadlock issue in filesystem-based libraries
  • Song ratings for iTunes libraries can now be embedded
  • Fixed middle-of-song silence issue
  • Fixed matchlist filter with ranges
  • Workaround for //?/ paths on Windows (issue seems to be caused by the Amazon MP3 downloader)
  • Small Retina related fixes for OS X

Java 7 on OS X, Round 2

beaTunes2 logoBack in April I posted a Java 7 version for OS X, believing that it was about time for Java 7 to shine… Well, unfortunately I was proven wrong.

Back then version 1.7.0_21 was current. Recently Oracle release Java 1.7.0_40 and it seems to address a number of the issues that made Update 21 so bad: Files with Umlauts can now be opened, and the file open dialog can now be used to select directories as well. That's why today I again release a beaTunes version with a bundled JRE 7. If you are unsure what this means, please simply download the regular version. For those of you interested in Java 7, please give this a go. Subjectively it seems faster. What do you think?

You can get beaTunes for OS X with Java7 here: beaTunes-3-5-16-jre-osx.dmg

Please let me know, if you encounter any problems!

beaTunes 3.5.12 - on Java7

beaTunes2 logoEven though Java 7 was originally released in 2011 (yes, pretty much two years ago!), there still isn't a version available for OS X that works as well as Apple's Java 6. However, we are getting very close to going prime time. As far as I know, only a couple of things are still missing. Most notable are Retina support and a flawlessly working full screen mode. But neither are really showstoppers. So, in addition to the regular beaTunes update, which can be found at the usual location, I decided to post another version of the update which comes with a bundled Java 7.
Why? Well, there really are two reasons:
  1. Feedback
  2. Speed!

Seriously, when playing around with it, it just left a really good impression. It feels a lot faster, more responsive. Neat. I figured, some of you might appreciate this :-)
So, take it for a spin and if you encounter any issues, please let me know in the support forum.
Thanks!
Requirement: OS X 10.7.3 or later

Update

Due to this bug in Java 7, you cannot create new folder-based libraries with this release. beaTunes simply won't let you choose a folder (see also here). To work around this issue, you can first download the regular release, create the library and then install the Java 7 release.

Update 2

Unfortunately, the current Java 7 (1.7.0_21) for OS X still can't deal with Umlauts in file names. For beaTunes this means a lot of FileNotFoundExceptions. I was assured by the Java dev team, that the fix, which is already included in Java 8 EA versions, will be available soon.
